How to (Really) fix Windows 7 boot problems

Home / Guides / How to (Really) fix Windows 7 boot problems

It’s quite usual these days to get into boot problems of Windows 7. There could be many reasons for this to happen. one of them which i faced is dual booting. I had my Windows 7 running perfectly until I installed latest version of Ubuntu Desktop 10.10. Ubuntu’s windows installer (wubi) is broken for 10.10 and does not work. Instead it corrupted the boot sector and system was simply refusing to boot again. It showed only a clue-less grub rescue mode.

I thought that Windows startup repair will fix this easily but it didn’t. So to make my Windows 7 bootable again, i had to go the hard way. Here are the detailed steps of fixing the Windows 7 boot problems even when startup repairs fail.

Set the computer to boot from CD/DVD. This is done through BIOS Setup. Usually F2 or DEL

OR

Select the boot device manually by pressing the F10 or F12 button at POST screen.

Our goal is to boot from CD/DVD.

A screen similar to the following will come up if you have a correct Windows 7 bootable DVD in the Drive and first boot device is set to this dvd drive. Press Any Key on the keyboard to start loading the Disk. This process is harmless.

After booting from the DVD you will be presented by a language selection screen. Just Click Next button here. as shown in the following image.

In the following image, click on Repair your computer link.

In the following screen select the partition where windows 7 is installed. This is usually C:. Then click next.

Now you will see a screen similar to the following. Click last option “Command Prompt” since we are going to go the hard way. 😉

Now you will see a command prompt (dos style) window like shown in the following image.

OK, that’s it. Now we can do the actual work. Run the following commands one by one, Press Enter after each command.

Press Enter at the end of each line.

c:

cd boot

attrib bcd -s -h -r

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /RebuildBcd

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

exit

Now Click Restart button to restart the computer. Don’t forget to remove the DVD from the drive otherwise it may boot from it again.

All done. Just restart the computer and remove the DVD or boot directly from hard disk.

Enjoy and don’t forget to add comments if this is useful. I would like to know your experiences too.
